There are many different reasons to come to Jacksonville and it doesn’t matter if you are stopping by on vacation or if you are making a move, it can keep you busy, happy and offer you much in life. If you do decide to visit the area, there is something that you should not ignore. Jacksonville Florida has a lot to offer in the way of history and you might just find that looking into it makes you appreciate the area even more.
First of all, the city of Jacksonville Florida is no small fry. In fact, it has over 840 sq miles and that makes it the largest city in the continental US. This also offers another benefit. The city is somewhat contained but it is possible to live in the surrounding area and still be close to the city. You might find that you are visiting on a regular basis to take advantage of all that it has to offer.
Not only is Jacksonville large, it is also young. I’m not talking about the age of the city, I’m talking about the age of those who live there. The average age is 36 years old, so if you think that Florida is only for those who are retired, you really need to rethink that possibility.
The name of the city has its roots in the civil war. It was named for General Andrew Jackson, who just so happened to be a military governor of Florida. What is perhaps most interesting about this bit of history is the fact that he never bothered to visit the city named after him.
Something that is part history and partly a natural fact is tied up in the St. Johns River. In North America, there are only two rivers that flow south and the St Johns River is one of them. All of the rest of the rivers flow South.
One other interesting fact is that the Southbank of Downtown was once home to a large ostrich farm. This was in the early 1900s and it was a big attraction for those who were visiting the area as well as for those who called Jacksonville home.
As you can see, there are some rather interesting facts to be learned about this Florida city and we have only really scratched the surface. As you learn more, you will see that it is quite an interesting place to be.
